With the support of Community Living London’s Community Access and the wonderful Access Centre staff, Alyssa has thrived with the support provided.  Community Access offers a full variety of leisure, practical learning, recreation and volunteer opportunities around the city of London. Adults who have an intellectual disability participate in many meaningful activities, and can use this program as an entrance into other activities in the community. The best aspect of Community Access is that they offer a lot of variety and choice; persons supported have a personalized schedule available that incorporates their interests, abilities and support requirements.

     When she was younger, Alyssa began participating in Community Living London’s Respite program. Alyssa’s parents knew their daughter would be well taken care of, by supportive and understanding staff from the very beginning. Alyssa enjoys Respite so much that her suitcase cannot be packed until right before she is about to leave because that is how much she looks forward to the time she’ll be spending there. Even though this is a time for her parents to relax from providing full-time care for Alyssa, her mother says she cannot wait to see Alyssa again – perhaps because of the happiness and excitement Alyssa derives from her time at Respite. This service offers temporary relief for caregivers by providing centre-based care. Respite services give children and adults the opportunity to meet new friends while families and caregivers can take the time for themselves or other family members. This service has three available options: weekend relief which is for children 18 and under from Friday evening until Sunday evening, extended relief and adult retreat which is provided in an apartment setting two weekends per month and focuses on independent living skills while still enjoying activities in the community.

          The services available to Alyssa are only two of the many services and programs Community Living London provides. These services are life changing, not only for Alyssa but also for all of the persons supported by Community Living London. These programs and services allow both people supported and their families to lead fulfilling lives. Thanks to the support Community Living London receives, the possibilities are now endless for Alyssa and her family.

While growing up, Ken’s father was in the Canadian armed forces. When his parents divorced, and his Dad had to move to Petawawa, approximately 30 years ago, it was decided that Ken would stay in London with his mother and brother. Ken had such an active life in London – his friends, job and with the day programs he attended at Community Living London, it just didn’t make sense to uproot him. Ken has a great sense of humor, always likes to joke around and rarely passes up the opportunity to get on a microphone. Ken has always been very proud of the money he earns from his weekly recycling and window washing at Community Living London’s main office and has always been an active participant in various recreational activities.

Thanks to the donations from our local sponsors, Debbie is able to work with staff trained in augmentative communication. After accessing the new communication tools and resources with staff support, it wasn’t long before Debbie learned to communicate again.

Using a personal communication board, Debbie’s skills progressed to where she was able to interact and express her needs and wants more easily. Debbie continued to build her vocabulary through the use of personalized communication tools such as picture books, language boards, and other communication aids. As Debbie’s life changes, staff helps her adapt to new communication tools to increase her abilities. This program flexibility and the communication strategies created through it, help Debbie enjoy her life more.

Tara first became connected with Community Living London when she was 20 years old and her family was going through a difficult time. Fortunately, Tara was able to take advantage of the many activities organized by Community Living London. Leisure activities such as dances, bowling, movie nights, dinners, and sporting events played an extremely important role in Tara’s ability to adapt and move forward.

Approximately 55 people who have an intellectual disability graduate from high schools in the London area each year. Many of the donations Community Living London has received have helped to ensure recreation, lifelong learning and employment and training opportunities are available for these graduates.

Tara’s mom said, “It is hard for me to think of what our family would have done had we not connected with Community Living London. Connecting with Community Living London is one of the best choices we have made for Tara and our family.”

Robin Harris is one person who depends on the Ford Access Centre van. Robin has Cerebral Palsy, and relies on the wheelchair for mobility. The new van makes it easy for Robin to use the Ford Access Centre as a spring board into the community. To Robin, the van provides opportunities to enhance his quality of life by meeting new people, taking chances, and broadening his horizons.

Robin’s parents, Jim and Georgina said, “He (Robin) really needs variety in his life or he can become quite sad. He does enjoy all the simple things that can be done close to home and the van at Ford Access is wonderful for this. First of all, he loves rides in the van by themselves. But he also loves to be taken to various places like parks and stories, the Western Fair, festivals and so on. We are very happy that he has this opportunity as part of his program with Community Living London. Thank you.”
