What are Community Access Centres?
Community Access Centres offer a full spectrum of leisure, practical learning, recreation and volunteer opportunities in neighbourhoods around the city.
Adults who have an intellectual disability can participate in structured day programs at an Access Centre, or use the centre as a jumping-off point to activities in the community.
How do Community Access Centres Work?
Community Access Centres offer variety and choice. Many adults sign up for arts and crafts classes, cooking, woodworking, karate or a combination of activities. Some spend all day at the centre, while others choose to stay for half the day or a specific activity.
Others who are ready for more independence are supported to explore opportunities in the neighbourhood, whether that's volunteering at the local day care or going for a walk in the park.

Specialized facilities and equipment are available at the Access Centres such as Snoezelen and virtual learning facilities. Snoezelen opportunities offer sensory stimulation to achieve calming and focusing. Virtual learning uses computer-based simulation to teach hand-eye coordination, decision-making and other life skills.
Snoezelen and virtual learning are offered at select Access Centres but are open to all participants and the community.
How Do I Get Involved?
Community Access Services works with individuals and their families to develop a personalized schedule that reflects interests, abilities and support requirements. Adults can choose from any combination of inclusive and specialized opportunities at a centre or in the community.
